Fall Goals: Two incomplete?!

This September I made a list of goals that I wanted to achieve before the end of the season. There were two goals on the list that I didn't even attempt! I was so busy this season that I never got around to trying to reach these goals... this means that they need to in some way carry over to my seasonal winter goals!

Sell something I've made by hand
This is so difficult for me because I make things for specific people... and then I don't make more of the cool things I've made. Does anyone want a sweet unicorn eye patch? Too bad, I only made one of them! I get complimented on things I make and wear all the time - but they're always one of a kind. I'm really going to get on this soon!

Cook 10 'new to me' dishes
This was actually a rather large goal for me. I probably only cooked 10 dinners this fall (Cameron does most of the cooking), and I tend to just cook things I know how to make. It's so much quicker to make one of my go-to chicken or pasta dishes than to bust out a new recipe! I really want to broaden my cooking range, anyone have any good recipes I should try out?

Stay tuned for my winter seasonal goals! Hint: there's a good chance they will be more wedding planning-oriented than the previous ones.

Fall Goals: 4 Easy Completions!

This September I made a list of goals that I wanted to achieve before the end of the season. I haven't managed to reach them all, but here are four that weren't too difficult to achieve with a passive amount of effort!

Spend more time with my niece and nephews
So this was actually a pretty easy goal for the fall. Birthdays, pumpkin patches, Thanksgiving eve dinner and swimming, and various quick trips to my sister's house (she lives about 30 minutes away) definitely allowed for more time than I usually get with them.

Love my life
I have been making an effort to truly appreciate the amazing people and things that make me happy. November is an especially easy month for this!

Make my Halloween costume (again)
Unfortunately I was sick most of October, but I still managed to throw together a last minute costume. I didn't make it all, but it was still fun!

Take a trip with Cameron
We did take a weekend roadtrip excursion for our anniversary. It was short but definitely sweet!

Fall Goal: Bake often

This September I made a list of goals that I wanted to achieve before the end of the season. I haven't managed to reach them all, but I'd like to share with you what I have gotten through!

Bake my pumpkin break, dutch apple pie, and peach kuchen often:
I chose these because I enjoy making them, and they are Cameron's favorites. He's not a cake or frosting person, so pasties and breads are the best bet to please his taste buds.

I didn't bake as much as I would have liked (I was sick so often, I am right now!), but I did it enough to fatten us up a little extra! Pumpkin bread was great as usual, but I haven't gotten to the Dutch Apple Pie yet. I think that will be for Christmas time.
I use a recipe from my great grandmother's church recipe book for my kuchen. But this time, I decided I wanted to make CupKuchen. Soooo good. And I didn't limit myself to peach - no, I branched out for real! I did peach, apple, blueberry, cranberry, blueberry peach, cran-apple, and cran-blueberry. I was so excited about the cranberries, I got them to taste like craisins before I baked them into the kuchen. I even got lucky and guessed the perfect baking time on my test cuppies!
They're so much prettier before they bake, but so much better with all the creamy yumminess!

Weekly Workwear: Spots & Coral

Bad pictures - the light was terrible and we were in a hurry!

Anyway, on Thanksgiving Eve my family always goes to the same Mexican restaurant and then to an indoor hot springs pool. The service is always slow, someone always gets in trouble at the pool for chucking balls (yes, usually this is the adult men), and we always have a lot of fun.

Unfortunately my aunt passed away this year, so she wasn't there. She is always the life of the party, and the whole tradition was a reminder that she is gone. For Thanksgiving day we went to Cameron's family's celebration. I didn't object to not going to my family's that day because once again, she'd be noticeably gone. It feels like I miss so much by her not being around.
I really love this dress. I got it for cheaps at Target a few months ago, and I love wearing it. It's got sweet turquoise straps. The cardigan was part of a buy one get one for a penny sale at Wet Seal. I'm wearing the plain tee I got for a penny right now!
This is at work earlier in the day. I obviously had cereal for breakfast and was knitting. If you look closely you'll see my label maker, a box full of name tags, and my striped boot slippers that have been under my desk since February. Sometimes my toesies get cold at work, people!

Fall Goal: Read 12 New-to-me Books

This September I made a list of goals that I wanted to achieve before the end of the season. I haven't managed to reach them all, but I'd like to share with you what I have gotten through!

Read 12 'new to me' books:
I never wanted Ready Player One to end. It is amazing and nerdy and fun. It made me want to draw, and reminded me of how awesome everything 80's is (not that I needed much reminding with Hailey around). It centers around a competition created by an eccentric millionaire. This man created a game which almost everyone in the world participates. People play for entertainment, they attend school virtually, and even work in this game. When the game's creator dies, he sets forth a competition - find the easter eggs in this massive virtual world and you get his entire estate. You follow one young, poor boy on his journey. There's good and evil, reflection on society, suspense, a little bit of teenage romance.  Oh yeah, and real trailer parks stacked up at least 9 trailers high.

The Dog Stars was another future-y story. You follow one man in a world after devastating plagues killed nearly everyone. The book essentially takes place in the main character's head, so dialogue isn't as easily discernible, things happen in his head and then don't happen for real... It started slow, I didn't know what to expect really. I kept waiting for the 'story' to start. And then it did. And I liked it. And it suddenly ended.

The Night Circus is spectacular. Don't read another word of this blog post, just read this book. I fell in love with the world in this book, with the circus, with the characters. Everything is so charming.

One day I was listening to NPR and one of the sponsorship messages happened to say something along the lines of 'Son by Lois Lowry, a sequel to the Giver.' Commence double-take. A SEQUEL? I remember reading the Giver in 4th grade. It was amazing. I still remember how I felt at certain parts of the book (some books really pull me in). So when I heard that I IMMEDIATELY went online to Amazon... and found three more books! Gathering Blue and Messenger aren't exactly sequels. They take place in the same world, but in other places. They focus on people who didn't necessarily fit in for some reason in their respective societies, but accomplish great things. They're all quick reads and I do recommend them.
I love memoirs. Yakuza Moon is a great story about a very different world. It's inspiring. A Piece of Cake is one I cheated on - I've read it before! But it was so long ago, and I've been dying to read it again. The sheer number of things that Cupcake (the name that was put on her birth certificate, though it was changed later) overcame in her life. Read this book, it might make you cry.

I love the shopaholic books. I hate the shopaholic movie. It was awful. I somehow hadn't gotten around to picking this one up yet (I own all the others except for Shopaholic & Sister). It is adorable. It's fun to follow the same character through so much of her life. From getting out of a job she was not suited for, to finding the right man, moving to the US with him, getting married (spoiler: twice!), finding out she had a sister, to being pregnant, and now her daughter is a few years old and a total spoiled brat. These books always have the most ridiculous things she gets herself into, but they are so fun. A little chick lit never hurt anyone.

Yes, I decided to read the Hunger Games books. I watched the movie when it came out (Cameron was eager after having read the first years ago), and really liked it. They did a good job following the book, but obviously some relationships were cut down for screen time. I'm excited to see Catching Fire, it was a great book this arena would be so cool to see. I also really want to see how they portray the different districts. I am less enthusiastic about Mockingjay. It was a good conclusion to the series, but it was my least favorite of the three. Maybe because for once you are more familiar with all the characters that are dying?

Anyway, next time I'll share with you how my baking goal went!

Weekend Wear: Peachy in Neutrals

I love this brown patterned dress. It's got a great drop-waist that makes me look extra thin in the waist and doesn't make my lovehandles look awful. You can't see the torso here, but it's mostly brown with a print on it, and there's a keyhole at the top.

I think that natural waist dresses sometimes make my legs look proportionately too long for my body, which is another reason I love drop-waist dresses (I'll let you in on a secret - my wedding dress has one too!). I even designed one for the last ModCloth Make the Cut competition... but none of my designs were chosen :)
Here's my peachy drop-waist dress design (the chevron fabric was part of the competition:

Look, the doggy wants to play! More like, the doggy wants to jump up and rip my tights...

Insta-gratification:

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving yesterday! Anyone doing the crazy Friday shopping thing? It's not Thanksgiving yet as I'm writing this, so I still have so much excitement pent up! I can't wait for Thanksgiving eve (Mexican food and hot springs) with my family and Thanksgiving day (turkey dinner as traditional) with Cameron's. I'll be sure to get some fun action shots to share.

Here are some Instagram photo moments from the past week or so. As always, you can find me @katiopeia!

Inertia likes to wake me up on the weekends for her breakfast. And she's a box kitty for sure.

She stealthily got into this photo of my 'lunch.'  Fortune cookies are sometimes amusing, but not quite what they used to be.

To and from work one day this week - via my windshield.

My nephews love Minecraft. One had a birthday on Saturday, hence Minecraft cake (half finished here. I had to leave my sister to finish it. I'm also going to mention that when I showed up to help she had already cut out about 200 squares from the uncolored fondant. Then we had to paint them. This is why they look glassy, but the Creeper and piggy don't).

Puppies want photo-love too! And a nice relaxing bubbly bath feels nice when you're sick and your back is sore.

Weekly Workwear: Denim & Stripes

I'm lucky when it comes to my workplace - I can wear almost anything I want. Unless we are having an event or clients are coming in, I can wear jeans, slippers, band shirts, pretty much anything. When I don't feel like dressing up for work, I like to lean toward 'business casual' with colored and dark jeans and simple tops or sweaters. This look is on the casual side for my work attire, but I think it would be appropriate if a client came in by surprise!

I love this striped top! It's from Old Navy but I got it for cheap at a thrift shop. The jeans and boots I've had for at least a year and the jacket I've had since college. I'm not shy about keeping around old clothes unless they're beat up. I never know when I'll have an urge to wear that denim dress with the cute pockets hidden at the back of my closet!

Weekly Workwear - Collars and Patterns

I love this new collared shirt I got. Sheer and airy - I can wear it with almost anything! I wore it like this all day to work, casual and untucked. Bright tank top, simple skirt, patterned tights, and simple flats. On another note, Cameron really needs to mow the lawn one more time!

Just as fun tucked in! I wore it this way when we went out to Chinese for dinner.

Obviously, the modelling part isn't my favorite. I like to wear fun clothes, and I love to share my style. But I'm so much more comfortable BEHIND the lens :)

Top - JC Penney| Tanktop, skirt - old... I can't remember | Leggings - GoJane | Shoes - Maybe Payless...

Good morning! This was before I left for work. I felt like getting a snapshot on my way out the door.

Halloween Fun Flashback

I had all these plans of being silent movie stars, making a grey drop-waist dress (actually, it is half made...), painting Cameron and myself grey and making little chalk boards that we could make into silent movie 'dialogue'... and then I was sick.

So we just joined in with my sister and cousin and were old-timey circus people. It didn't take too much effort, and my hair was so fun to do! I was a lion tamer (that looked a bit like a lion...and had been slightly mauled) and Cameron was a fire eater. I got to draw tattoos on him and make his flame sticks. Of course I drew a lion on him, as I was the lion tamer!

We got him some dress pants and shoes from Savers, I sewed his pants into man-pris, he already had the tanktop, suspenders, and he wanted to get the boa!

Also in the circus: Ringmaster, bearded lady, strongman, and human target.

The flame sticks were fun. At first I was going to make them look like the flames had burnt out, then I added little feathery flames, and then Cameron decided he liked just the feathery flames the best (my sister and I were still partial to my burnt fabric balls).

I already had the corset top I wore as well as the shoes and tights (they had a hole in them already, so I just started cutting a bloodying away). I grabbed some fabric from Joanns to make a quick skirt) and I decided I was done! My huge hair and lion-y makeup was my favorite (picture at the top of the post, minus the giant fake eyelashes I put on later). My hair was pretty much an afro without being teased! Unfortunately, with so much hair and all the dancing, it wasn't so large by the end of the night.

Hailey was Jereth the Goblin King from Labrynth! It was amazing. She wore a cup and everything!

Most of the pictures were taken in a darkened house and bar, it almost gives them an old timey feel maybe? Maybe? So we should probably just pretend like that was on purpose :)

Fun Finds - Teagan White Art

So... I was just cruising around the internet at work, like I do, when I stumbled on this awesome iPhone case on Society6 by Teagan White. And then there are all these other amazing drawings, so many I can't decide which I like most! Such a range in subject matter - from cute foxes, deer, and owls, to typography, bugs, florals, and more realistic drawings. I'm in love! New iPhone case, here I come! Now, which to pick?!

The Ghost of Halloweens Past

Alright, so I've been terrible lately! I've been sick pretty much constantly for a month, and I've kind of slacked on the blogging thing. Also on the Halloween costume thing (gasp!). I'm still feeling less than healthy, but I'll do better I promise!

Tomorrow I'll post about what we dressed up as this year (hint, it was so last minute I didn't even know until two days before Halloween!), but I thought I'd first put up a few pictures of the last couple of years.

2005 - Me and Hailey - tennis player and lacross player. Short skirts, accessories, and an obviously last minute idea. This was not our room, by the way.

2006 - I was a cop. College was all about last minute costumes.

2007 - I was a pregnant housewife. Somewhere I have a picture of me in a sundress with a giant pregnant belly and a huge glass of beer. I can't locate it right now!

2008 - Kat von D - ripped t-shirt... sharpie tattoos... pretty purple heels, giant hair flower.

2009 - Some version of Princess Lolly from candyland. I couldn't find yellow fabric that I liked so I used turquoise and white for my dress, made candy out of felt to decorate it, and sprinkles. This is literally the only photo of it I have.

2010 - Poison Ivy! I hand sewed leaves to a tanktop and pair of boyshort undies. Wig, hair doo-dad, tights and tall boots.

2011 - Edward scissorhands. Cam was a ninja turtle. I made my scissorhands, my sister cut the wig into a crazy mess, I did my makeup and wore a corset and about 30 belts I got at thrift stores.
Cameron wore a unitard, I painted the chest of his shell, he spray painted the shell. I sewed all his red bits, made a harness for the shell, and he got some fake weapons from the store.

Not Halloween - Anything but clothes party newspaper princess, 80's birthday party zombies, and dumb and dumber.
